Why Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is both an art and a science. It uses essential oils to restore harmony to body, mind, and spirit. Each oil carries unique therapeutic, chemical, and energetic properties. When blended intentionally, they not only smell beautiful but also unlock deep healing potential.
Essential oils don’t just work on the physical body — they also reach the subtle energetic body, helping to dissolve blocks caused by trauma, stress, or old emotional patterns. By gently opening these pathways, aromatherapy helps energy flow freely again, allowing you to return to your natural state of harmony and wholeness.
The Science Behind Aromatherapy
When you inhale essential oils, the aromatic molecules travel to the back of your nasal cavity, where they interact with specialized nerve cells called olfactory receptors. These receptors send signals directly to the limbic system of the brain. The limbic system is a group of brain structures that plays a crucial role in regulating emotions, memory, and behavior. This direct connection is why scents can trigger immediate and powerful emotional or physiological responses.
Within the limbic system, essential oils are thought to:
Influence Neurotransmitters: Certain compounds in essential oils, like linalool in lavender, have been shown to affect neurotransmitter systems. This can modulate levels of chemicals like serotonin and dopamine, which are key to mood regulation.
Modulate the Stress Response: Aromatherapy can interact with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which controls the body’s stress response. By influencing this system, some essential oils may help lower cortisol (the stress hormone) levels.
Affect the Autonomic Nervous System: The limbic system is also connected to the autonomic nervous system, which controls involuntary bodily functions like heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing. This is why certain scents can induce a state of relaxation (by promoting the parasympathetic “rest and diges” response) or alertness (by promoting the sympathetic “fight or flight” response).
